Key Information on Medicine Packaging
The survey identified the most important details consumers look for on medicine packaging:
1. Date of Manufacture and Expiry Date: Ensuring the medicine is safe to use.
2. Indications and Usage/Dosage: Understanding the conditions the medicine treats and how to use it correctly.
3. Main Ingredients, Brand, and Manufacturer: Ensuring the medicine suits their needs and is from a trusted source.
4. Medicine Approval Number: Though less frequently checked, it helps verify the medicine's legitimacy.
Essential Information on Medicine Packaging
To ensure safety and proper usage, six key pieces of information must be present on medicine packaging:
1. Medicine Name: Both generic and commercial names are essential. The generic name refers to the active ingredient, while the commercial name is the trademark. Knowing both helps avoid side effects from using multiple medicines with the same active ingredient.
2. Indications: Details about the conditions the medicine treats help consumers choose the right product.
3. Expiry Date: Critical for avoiding the consumption of expired, potentially harmful medications.
4. Usage and Dosage: Clear instructions are crucial, especially for OTC medicines. For prescribed medicines, the doctor’s specific instructions may sometimes differ from the packaging and should be followed.
5. Approval Number: Each medicine has a unique approval number, akin to an ID, which helps verify its authenticity.
6. Proprietary Logo: This indicates the type and safety of the medicine. There are three main logos:
- OTC Logo: Divided into Class A (red) and Class B (green). Class B medicines are safer and can be sold in various places, while Class A medicines should be taken under a doctor’s guidance.
- External Medicine Logo: Indicates medicines for external use.
- Special Management Medicine Logo: Indicates medicines under special regulatory management.
Additional Information
- Ingredients: Important for those with allergies.
- Storage Methods: Proper storage conditions are necessary to maintain the medicine’s efficacy.
