Packaging Gravure Presses
Gravure packaging and product presses are divided into two distinct groups for light weight versus heavy weight substrates. Typical products for light weight substrates include but are not limited to flexible packaging, gift wraps, paper and foil labels, and decorative films, lleavy weight substrates include folding cartons, floor coverings, vinyl sheet shower curtains, place mats and outdoor furniture. The weight ranges of substrates overlap in the mid-range, making it possible to print a variety of products and substrates on the same press. Some of the common in-line operations performed on these presses include:
• Die cutting
• Creasing
• Coating
• Laminating
• Sheeting
• Rewinding
• Punching/perforating
• Slitting
• Trimming
• Stripping
• Embossing
Typical applications for gravure package printing include folding cartons, flexible packaging and gravure labels and wraps. Each of these applications makes special demands of the gravure press, in addition to different requirements for in-line finishing.
A Five-color gravure press for wallcovering, decorative laminates and floor covering, printing on an eight-foot-wide web is shown in Figure 4-3.
